Assignments are an essential part of your legal studies - you should take care to ensure they are properly prepared and submitted.

Make sure you are aware of the penalties for late submission of assignments.

How to submit your assignment

Step one: prepare and copy your work

Assignments should be typed where possible. You are required to save a copy to safeguard against loss or theft.

You must stick to the specified word or page limit or you may be penalised. Footnotes are not included in the word count, provided they are used only to give citations or other brief information.

Step two: attach coversheet

Generate a coversheet and attach it to your assignment. Hard copies of assignment cover pages are no longer available from Reception.

You will need to have an active Business School account to generate this.

Step three: submit your assignment

Assignments should be submitted during office hours in the Law School's assignment boxes outside reception. Place your assignment in the box corresponding to the unit name or in the Other slot if your unit is not there.

If you are unable to submit your assignment during office hours, an after-hours submission box in the Law Library is accessible during library opening hours. Only submit assignments in this box when the Law School reception is closed; if you use it at any other time, we may not see your assignment until the following day, which may result in you incurring a late penalty. The after-hours box is not monitored over the weekend, so any assignments submitted over the weekend will be collected on Monday morning.

At midday on the day your assignment is due, we will empty the assignment boxes and scan the barcode on your cover sheet. You will then receive a receipt by email, confirming that we have received and registered your assignment.

Students enrolled in a Business Law unit submit assignments to the Business Law Office, Room 2.36, second floor of the Law Link Building. Assignments go in the slot in the door.

Applications for extensions

If you are unable, for valid reasons, to meet the deadlines you may seek an extension of time from the unit co-ordinator before the submission day. You should contact the unit co-ordinator to discuss your difficulties as soon as possible. Applications for an extension should be in writing and supported by medical certificates where appropriate.

Late submissions

Assignments must be handed in on time. This is usually 12 noon (unless otherwise advised) on the due day at the Law School General Office, or at the Business Law Office for students enrolled in a Business Law unit. Assignments submitted after the normal or extended date without approval will be penalised by a loss of marks, simply to ensure fairness to other students who hand in their assignments on time.

In the absence of another express rule for a unit, a proportional deduction will be incurred of five per cent of the marks per day (each 24-hour block is recorded from midday on the day the assignment is due). For example: a student is two days late and would have been awarded 65 per cent for their assignment had it been submitted on time. The student loses a proportional 10 per cent (6.5 marks), so their final mark will be 65-6.5 = 58.5 per cent.

Assignments submitted into the after-hours box in the library over the weekend will not be collected until Monday morning, so will therefore incur a penalty for the whole weekend.

Unit coordinators and individual lecturers may advise students about specific rules relating to lateness.

This policy on late submission does not apply to take-home exams.

Assignment returns

Assignments will, for the most part, be handed back in class, so it is important to attend all classes in order to collect assignments and results, as well as to receive important general feedback from your lecturer and/or tutor.

If for some reason assignments cannot be distributed in class, students will be notified via email of the appropriate time and place to collect their assignments.
